How Do I Know if My Child Needs to Wear a Mouthguard?

Posted .

If you ever wonder if your child needs to wear a mouthguard, the answer is probably yes. Your child deserves a strong, healthy, and top-notch smile, and one of the best ways to maintain that smile is by protecting the teeth, gums, and jaw with a mouthguard. Our dentist, Dr. Amber N. Wright, would like to help you by telling you about the best times to wear a mouthguard.

There are two situations when a mouthguard can benefit your child and their smile. The first situation is when your child plays high-contact sports and activities, including football, basketball, soccer, rugby, karate, wrestling, and more. During these sports and activities, your child could suffer a blow to the face, which could result in oral injuries if they are not wearing a mouthguard. So, please have your child wear a mouthguard if they participate in any of these sports or activities. The second situation is when your child tends to grind their teeth when they sleep. Wearing a mouthguard can help them avoid wearing down and breaking the tooth enamel. If a mouthguard is necessary, your dentist will prescribe it.

If your child needs some convincing when they are told they need to wear a mouthguard, there are a couple things you can do. First, you can tell them about the oral injuries that can occur if they don’t wear a mouthguard, like knocked-out, broken, and chipped teeth. Second, you can show them a picture of their favorite professional athlete wearing a mouthguard during the game. This might help them feel better about wearing the appliance.
